It was in the summer of 1968 that a group of artists on northern Öland came together and held the first summer exhibition in Åkerboskolan. This was the beginning of a long tradition of exhibitions with professional artists, both residents and summer residents, in the old Öland municipality of Åkerbo. The composition of the group has naturally changed over the years.

Before the summer of 1993, the artists decided to open their studio to the public. In 2018, the Åkerbo artists celebrated 50 years, including a large anniversary exhibition in the art gallery in Himmelsberga, Öland Museum.
The group was also awarded the Borgholm municipality's cultural prize of SEK 10,000 and was also rewarded by Kalmar Läns Landsting with SEK 25,000.
In 2019, the group exhibited at the Swedish Embassy's residence in Iceland.
